We all have our moments where we are in a creative rut. A creative rut is what happens when one’s creativity and inspiration is not flowing as it usually does. You have a paper due, a painting to paint or a song or poem to write but, your mind is drawing nothing but blanks. That feeling of lacking creativity and the inspiration needed to complete the tasks at hand, can be one of the most tortuous feelings ever!!

I experience my own creative ruts from time to time that make me want to scream, flip over my desk or both! It is beyond annoying as a creative do go through those moments where you feel average, uninspired and unmotivated. 1. Pray

I have found that praying to God before I write an article or poem, has tremendously helped my creativity flow and flourish. My prayer always is, “Father, I ask you to please let my creativity flow from my mind, to my hands, to my keyboard, to the screen. Let everything flow as it should and let me focus as I need to. In Jesus name, Amen”. I promise you, each and every single time I say this prayer, I get what I need to get done.

2. People-Watching

People-watching can be a great way to get your creativity and inspiration flowing. Now, I am not suggesting to be a creeper or stalker, I am simply saying just by observing people in a respectable and discreet manner, can help boost creativity. Going to your local mall or park, can provide you the creativity you need. I one time was observing a man walking down my street wearing a shirt that said, “Either Love Me, Fuck Me or Both”. I was so enthralled with the shirt, I was able to create a poem from it.

3. Browse Social Media

Yes, social media can be a great distraction for most but, it can also be a great source to help spark creativity. I find that of all the social media platforms, Instagram is number one in having endless posts that are vibrant, alluring and can help ignite your creativity. I love looking at artists’ pages of their paintings and feeling connected to it in a way that helps me want to create my own masterpiece in word form. I also love reading poems by poets on there that help give me topic ideas to write about.
